Railcar Scrapping 1xx

Years ago GSRM acquired the car we are about to scrap to be used just for its frame. Some of our very hearty members are working to scrap the parts we do not want. This is Minnesota and it gets real cold and snows here during our Winters and it is a credit to those people who are working on this project and seeing real progress.

The crew doing the work on this page of pictures was, Adam, Lloyd, Deb and new GSRM friend Chad!

More crew members are needed for this project, please drop us an email if you would like to participate! info@gsrm.org

01/08 Before you begin any project a good set of tools is needed. Rather than rent our equipment for this big job we felt it smarter to purchase the heavy duty tools needed. Great idea Adam!

01/08 Thanks to eBay and Adam we have a new metal saw!

01/08 This is the way the car looked on day one after testing to find the best way to remove the exterior plating.

01/08 Not quite sliced butter but this is faster than a cutting torch!

01/08 Practice cuts with the new saw are very promising.

01/08 Beginning of day two of the removal of the outer skin.

01/08 This is the start of a scrap pile that will be hauled to Mankato, MN.

01/08 Lots of snow sits in the car we are tearing apart.

01/08 A nice sliding glass door would fit here, if we had a ceiling.

01/08 Lloyd and Deb try to stay warm as they work.

01/08 Pull down those flaps you sissy.

01/08 Adam tries not to kill himself as he cuts more openings.

01/08 I can bet stretching like that will give Adam some very sore muscles later.

01/08 Lloyd removes some of the appliances from the car.

01/08 Sometimes a torch was needed to remove a grab iron.

01/08 Adam gets tough with that grab iron, sparks are flying.

01/08 Lloyd was glad this was not a no smoking car!

01/08 Lloyd removes more parts that will be saved from the car.

01/08 Is the wrench cold Lloyd?

01/08 The crew is starting to make some good progress.

01/08 Scarp piles getting larger.

01/08 Lloyd and Deb's catch for the day.

01/08 A big torch has been brought in for heavy cutting. Chad finishes putting it together.

01/08 Chad knows as the rest of us you need to have good tools to get any job done. GSRM has many activities that raise funds so equipment can be purchased for what ever purposed need.

01/08 100' for hose makes it easier to reach difficult spots.

01/08 Chad works at removing roof parts as the scrapping continues.

01/08 Part of what Chad is removing is wood that might catch fire when torches are used to remove the roof bracing.

01/08 Chad is our new hero as he volunteers with GSRM for the first time! We are looking for new hero's all the time.

01/08 Chad time to try the new torch?

01/08 Great job crew!

01/08 Nice view of the roof, no wonder the car needed to be scrapped.
